Acne, is commonly known as ‘pimples’. It is a disease of the oil (sebaceous) glands which are present in the skin throughout the body, except the eyelids, the pahns and the soles. If you are looking forward to Morpheus8 Treatment Atlanta

The sebaceous glands develop as an appendage of the hairroot (hair follicle) and pour their secretion (called ‘sebum’) into the hair follicle, through which it reaches the surface of the skin. The secretion of the sebaceous glands makes the skin soft and smooth and provides protection against some infectious agents.

During childhood the sebaceous glands are mostly inactive, but at the onset of adolescence, due to the influence of hormones, these glands enlarge in size and become fully functional. This change is a part of the process of growing up from childhood to adulthood.

The largest sebaceous glands are present on the face, the scalp, the upper parts of the chest and the back. They are also more profuse in these areas. The acne lesions therefore, occur predominantly on the face, the upper part of the chest and the back. The scalp is not involved because the coarse hairs on the scalp prevent blockage of the sebaceous glands, which causes acne. Acne on the other hand, predominantly involves those hair and oil (pilo-sebaceous) glands where the hair is small and thin (vellus hair) while the sebaceous gland is large.

Acne occurs in almost every individual though in some persons it is mild and transitory, while in others it is severe and continues for a long period. In most individuals, however, arne disappears by the age of 25 years or so.
